When it comes to skincare, a lot of information is often said about oily, dry and combination skin. However, not a lot is said about normal skin, due to the common misconception that normal skin does not require a lot of care.
In this blog, we’ll explore what normal skin really is, how to care for it, and how to maintain its natural glow.
So, what is normal skin…
Normal skin refers to a well-balanced skin that is not too dry nor too oily. It is regarded as the ideal skin type and is not very common in the population.
Some characteristics of normal skin are:
Well balanced hydration levels.
Fine pores that aren’t too large or clogged.
A smooth and even texture without noticeable blemishes.
A radiant complexion.
Balanced oil production (neither too oily nor too dry).
A healthy circulation, giving it a radiant and natural glow.
Minimal sensitivity (typically doesn’t react easily to products or environmental changes).
Intact skin barrier
How to take care of normal skin
While normal skin might not need a full-blown skin care routine, it still needs to be looked after because lack of care can result in the skin becoming dry. People with normal skin may also occasionally encounter mild breakouts, or sensitivity due to factors like hormonal changes, weather shifts, and lifestyle choices.
Here are some simple steps to help keep the skin healthy and balanced
Face cleanse: Washing the face with a mild cleanser every morning before going out and every night before bed, helps remove the bacteria accumulated on the face over the night and all through the day.
Tone: A gentle toner helps to restore pH balance and prep the skin for better absorption of moisturizers or serums.
Moisturize: Nourish your skin and maintain optimal hydration levels with a daily morning and night application of a lightweight moisturizer after cleansing. Moisturizing helps to keep the skin moist and prevent it from producing excess sebum.
Wear Sunscreen: Sunscreen should be everyone’s best friend irrespective of the skin type or colour. They help protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays such as wrinkles and dry patches. Oil-free sunscreen is advised to avoid clogging of the skin pores.
Remove your makeup: To avoid your pores clogging up as a result of over-stay of makeup. Remove it before you go to bed.
Exfoliate To gently remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores, incorporate a chemical exfoliant into your routine 1-2 times per week depending on your tolerance. Opt for an exfoliant containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) that suit your skin type.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking at least 2 litres of water per day will help keep both your organs and skin well hydrated. When there is an inadequate amount of water in the skin cells it can results in the skin drying up and becoming flaky, this could trigger excess production of sebum.
Lifestyle Tips for Maintaining Normal Skin:
• Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats.
• Get enough sleep to allow skin to repair overnight.
• Manage stress, as it can still trigger skin imbalances.
• Avoid overusing harsh skincare products that could disrupt the skin’s natural balance.
