Type 1B Hair: Best Practices and Products

Type 1B Hair

What is type 1B hair?

It is the second type of type 1 (straight) hair and is the most common straight hair type. It is generally straight when left unstyled but has more volume and can hold a curl better than Type 1A.

Type 1B hair has more body, may show subtle bends or waves, especially towards the ends, and tends to be medium in texture.

Characteristics of Type 1B Hair

  • Texture: Medium, thicker than 1A but finer than 1C
  • Sheen: Naturally shiny due to the straightness which, allows oils to travel down the shaft easily.
  • Volume: More body and movement than 1A hair, and can hold a few curls.
  • Frizz: Can be prone to frizz, especially in humid climates.
  • Oiliness: Can get oily at the roots relatively quickly and is prone to having a greasy appearance.
  • Wave: Mostly straight strands but often has a slight wave or kink, especially at the ends.
  • Style: It’s an easier hair type to style in many different ways.

How to Care for Type 1B Hair

Wash your hair regularly: Since Type 1B hair can become oily quickly, regular scalp cleansing is essential to prevent build-up and maintain volume. Regularly washing the hair ensures it remains clean and free from looking limp and oily.

The ideal frequency is 3-4 times weekly, as over washing can lead to overproduction of sebum. Dry shampoo can be used on non-wash days.

Tone down the application of products: Some straight hair may sometimes appear lifeless without the application of products. If that is the case for you, find a product with multiple benefits rather than using numerous products.

Avoid Heavy Products: Thick creams, serums, heavy butters and heavy oils can weigh down the hair, making it look greasy or limp. Opt for lightweight leave-in conditioners and mists.

Dry your hair before sleeping: Sleeping on wet hair is one major way to attract frizz or cowlicks to the hair. Frizz makes it extremely difficult to work with in the morning.

Protect from Heat: When styling with heat tools, always use a heat protectant spray to prevent damage.

Styling: It is advised to blow dry the hair upside down to give it more volume and brush it using a round brush. Use a boar bristle brush or a wide-tooth comb to distribute oils and reduce breakage.

How to Wash Type 1B Hair

  • Frequency: 2–3 times weekly (or as needed based on oiliness).
  • Shampoo: Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove product and oil buildup.
  • Conditioner: Focus conditioner only on the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Rinse: Finish with cold water to seal the cuticle and boost shine.
